Frequently Asked Questions

A L.Ac.in Texas is an individual that has earned a Master’s degree from an accredited 3-4 year program with extensive training in Chinese medicine (theory, acupuncture, herbology) as well as western medicine (anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and biochemistry) Additionally, over 1000 hours of hands-on treatment in the student clinic is mandatory. A L.Ac is also required to have passed 4 separate board exams in foundations, biomedicine, acupuncture with point location, and Chinese herbology.
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is the insertion of tiny, hair-thin needles into specific points along an energetic pathway (aka channel or meridian) in order to unblock and release any stagnation and restore balance to body and mind. Acupuncture helps relieve pain by stimulating the brain to release endorphins. It can also assist in balancing the nervous system, taking us out of “fight or flight” mode, and bringing us into a parasympathetic state. The parasympathetic branch of our nervous system is involved in relaxation, rest, digestion, and repair of tissues. It is difficult to heal when we are in a constant state of stress and agitation, an all too common reality for many. The experience of acupuncture tends to be extremely relaxing, and some even fall asleep during their session.
What is qi?
Qi is an important concept found in both Chinese medicine and Chinese culture in general. Qi is the universal life force energy in everything that exists, and from which everything arises. In the specific context of our human minds and bodies, qi is the vital substance flowing through us, sustaining the function of our cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Modern day stress and overstimulation, poor diet, insufficient sleep,a sedentary lifestyle, etc. can all contribute to qi not flowing properly. As a result, our mental and physical health suffers. Acupuncture helps both move and strengthen qi, creating a sense of ease and well-being.
What conditions can be treated with acupuncture?
A myriad of conditions can be addressed with acupuncture, including insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, headaches, allergies, infertility, acute pain, chronic pain, and digestive issues, just to name a few.
How many treatments will I need?
This can vary quite a bit. If you are a relatively healthy person with an acute symptom ie. a sore neck from sleeping on an uncomfortable pillow the night before, then the issue is sometimes resolved in one session. If, however, you have a long-standing condition like chronic pain, or multiple concerns to address, more treatments will be needed.
Do the needles hurt?
Because the needles are very tiny, and my technique is gentle, there should never be pain. The most common sensations experienced are a dull ache around the needle site, mild tingling, a pleasant heaviness in the limbs, and waves of energy “zipping” around the body.
How much does it cost?
My fee is $110 per session. If you are new, initial appointments are 75 minutes at no additional charge. Follow up appointments are 60 minutes.
Do you take insurance?
I do not accept insurance at this time. I do accept all heath savings accounts and flexible spending accounts. (HSAs and FSAs)
What is cupping and how is it helpful?
Cupping involves the application of glass cups onto the skin which creates a vacuum and lifts the soft tissue, increasing circulation and providing relief from muscular tension. I like to do gliding cupping, which involves moving multiple cups along the area (most commonly the entire back). The intensity can easily be adjusted to your comfort level.
